This close up photograph of a Leucistic Antarctic Fur Seal was taken as we were Zodiac cruising in Right Whale Bay on the north coast of South Georgia on the afternoon of January 1, 2007. The temperature was in the low 40's on this partly cloudy day. This was our eighteenth Zodiac trip. South Georgia boasts a population of three million fur seals. Leucistic seals occur at a frequency of 1 in 8,000. Count the number of leucistic seals and multiply by 8,000 to get an idea of the total number of fur seals.
