This photograph of female Black-throated Finches was taken as we hiked in the grasses near the shore of George Island on the morning of January 5, 2007. This island is situated at the southern entrance to Falkland Sound and, along with nearby Barren Island, forms the southernmost working farm on the Falkland Islands. In 2001, the May family purchased the island from the Falkland Islands Company which had owned the island for the past 150 years. The May family lives on the island most of the year. George Island is free of introduced rodents and provides visitors with a good range of wildlife. It supports more than 40 species of birds including Tussacbirds, Cobb's Wren, Southern Giant-Petrel, and Ruddy-headed Goose. We were invited to stop for tea and cookies at the farmhouse or just bird the island. Temperatures on this partly cloudy, very windy day were in the low 50's. We enjoyed putting our feet on solid ground after the rough ride we had in the Southern Ocean. This was our twentieth Zodiac trip.
