This photograph of two Rock Cormorants tending their young was taken on Bleaker Island which is south of mainland East Falkland. We hiked approximately two miles on the afternoon of January 5, 2007, to get a look at Rockhopper Penguins. A small flock of Rock Cormorants was nesting on the rocky cliffs near the Rockopper Penguins. The white patch on their ear-coverts is present during breeding season. Temperatures on this partly cloudy, very windy (gusts to 30 miles/hour) day were in the low 50's. Because of high winds and treacherous seas, our captain had to be very flexible when trying to schedule Zodiac landings. Our planned first morning landing on Sea Lion Island was cancelled and replaced with this afternoon landing. This was our twenty-first and last Zodiac trip.
