This photograph of a juvenile Southern Caracara was taken on Bleaker Island which is south of mainland East Falkland. We hiked approximately two miles on the afternoon of January 5, 2007, to get a look at Rockhopper Penguins nesting on the cliffs of the island. The Southern Caracara and Rock Shags shared the same general area on the rocky cliffs, while the Rockhoppers claimed cliffs on the other side of the bay. Temperatures on this partly cloudy, very windy (gusts to 30 miles/hour) day were in the low 50's.
