This photograph of a Silver Teal (foreground) swimming in a fresh water pond was taken near Port Stanley, Falkland Islands, as we hiked along the top end of Cape Pembroke on the morning of January 6, 2007. The Silver Teal is a small stocky duck with a buff face and brownish-black cap. It has a blue bill with a yellow base. Males and females of the species are similar, but the female is browner and has more restricted yellow at the base of the bill. Temperatures were in the low 50's on this partly cloudy to rainy day. After this morning bird hike, we had lunch in Port Stanley at the Upland Goose and then headed to Mt. Pleasant airport for our departure to Santiago, Chile.
