This photograph of Speckled Teals eating near a fresh water pond was taken not far from Port Stanley, Falkland Islands, as we hiked along the top end of Cape Pembroke on the morning of January 6, 2007. The Speckled Teal's dark head, unmarked flanks, small stocky build with a short-necked appearance and a bright yellow bill with a dark culmen and tip are diagnostic. Both sexes are similar. Temperatures were in the low 50's on this partly cloudy to rainy day.
