Before we birded in the area of Parque Nacional Sierra de San Pedro Martir and after we stopped at the Santo Tomas Winery, we birded along several streams. It was at one of these stops that we saw the Western Fence Lizard (Sceloporus occidentalis). This lizard is a member of the genus Sceloporus, and therefore is a spiny lizard. Its dorsal scales are keeled and pointed with a dark brown or black blotched pattern and small blue spots on its back and a large one on its throat. This lizard has blue ventral patches, a black mid-ventral stripe separating the patches and yellow or orange on the rear under surfaces of its limbs. It was a partly cloudy day with temperatures in the mid- to high 70's.
