During the morning of October 4, 2011, we birded the main trail at Reserva Volta Velha. Brad photographed this male (Amazonian) White-tailed Trogon, Trogon viridis, as it perched in a nearby tree. It is identified by the undertail pattern. Both sexes have a complete bluish eye ring. The Volta Velha Reserve is a popular birding spot in southern Brazil and is well-known among birders around the world. It is located in Itapoã on the northern coast of Santa Catarina state. The reserve encompasses about 2,300 acres within one of the largest areas of undisturbed Atlantic Forest (lowland rainforest on the coastal plain of Brazil) and is one of the most endangered biomes on earth. Temperatures were in the low 80's on this partly cloudy day.
