Part I of our Brazilian odyssey began on October 2, 2011, when we traveled from Iguaçu Falls to Curitiba and headed south from there to Itapoã. We were doing some late afternoon birding near Garuva when we took this photograph of a male Black-backed Tanager, a Brazilian endemic. This spectacularly colored male has bluish-turquoise underparts, a chestnut colored head and black back and dusky colored wings with greenish fringes. Temperatures were in the mid-70's on this partly cloudy day.
