We took this photograph of a male Blue (Swallow-tailed) Manakin, Chiroxiphia caudata, during the morning of October 4, 2011, while hiking the main trail at Reserva Volta Vehla. Males sport a red crown atop a black head. The rest of the body is a vibrant bright blue color except for the black wings and tail. Central tail feathers are elongated in both sexes. Males form leks, a gathering place for courtship displays, that typically consist of a single adult and two sub-adult males, where they sing and "dance" to attract females. Temperatures were in the low 80's on this cloudy, overcast morning.
