Our group spent the morning of October 5, 2011, birding the highlands of the Serra da Graciosa, a southern extension of the Serra do Mar, a long system of mountain ranges and escarpments in Southeastern Brazil that runs parallel to the Atlantic Ocean's coast. The male Blue (Swallow-tailed) Manakin, Chiroxiphia caudata, shown in this photograph has a bright red crown atop a black head. The rest of the body is a vibrant bright blue color except for the black wings and tail. Central tail feathers are elongated in both sexes. Males form leks, a gathering place for courtship displays, that typically consist of a single adult and two sub-adult males, where they sing and "dance" to attract females. Temperatures were in the mid-60's on this cloudy, overcast morning.
