Early in the morning on October 3, 2011, we arrived at Reserva Volta Velha for a day of birding along the main trail. The Kayapó (Caiapó in Portuguese) lndian Long House is a prominent feature located in the fields leading to the forested area of the reserve. This centrally located hut served as a meeting place for village men to discuss community issues. I don't know what these Campo Flickers were discussing, but they were perched atop the long house and kept a close eye on us as we walked near them. Campo Flickers, Colaptes campestris, (nominate species) are characterized by their black forehead and throat, red and black malar, and orange-yellow collar and ear coverts. Termites, ants and beetles are the main diet of these ground foraging woodpeckers. The Volta Velha Reserve is a popular birding spot in southern Brazil and is well-known among birders around the world. It is located in Itapoã on the northern coast of Santa Catarina state. The reserve encompasses about 2,300 acres within one of the largest areas of undisturbed Atlantic Forest (lowland rainforest on the coastal plain of Brazil) and is one of the most endangered biomes on earth. Temperatures were in the mid-70's on this partly cloudy day.
