Brad took this photograph of a male Chestnut-backed Tanager (Tangara preciosa) while we were birding the escarpment at Colinhas do São Francisco during the morning of October 8, 2011. The coppery-rufous mantle differentiates this species from the Black-backed Tanager that has a black mantle. Females of each species are not safely identified in the field. Temperatures were in the upper 60's on this humid, overcast morning.
