During the early part of the afternoon of October 10, 2011, we birded the grounds of our hotel, the Hotel Veraneio Hampel, in São Francisco de Paula, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. We found this Cane Toad (Bufo marinus), also known as the Giant Neotropical Toad or Marine Toad, near one of the lakes on the property. It is a large, terrestrial true toad which is native to Central and South America. This toad has a life expectancy of 10 to 15 years in the wild. In addition to enlarged parotoid glands behind the eyes, the skin of the adult cane toad is also toxic. When the toads are threatened, their glands secrete a milky-white fluid known as bufotoxin. By inflating its lungs, the Cane Toad puffs itself up and lifts its body off the ground making it appear larger and taller and more threatening to potential predators. Temperatures were in the upper 70's to low 80's on this partly cloudy day with intermittent rain.
