Brad took this photograph of a black Millipede while we were birding the escarpment at Colinhas do São Francisco during the morning of October 8, 2011. Millipedes are arthropods that have two pairs of legs per segment. However, the first segment behind the head doesn't have any appendages at all while the next few segments only have one pair of legs. A segment that has two pairs of legs attached is the result of two single segments fused together as one. Temperatures were in the upper 60's on this humid, overcast morning.
