On October 3, 2011, our group had a full day of birding at Reserva Volta Velha. After lunch in the dining hall, we enjoyed free-time until 1500. To make the most of our time at the reserve, we birded the grounds around the dining hall. We photographed this Araucaria Tree because of its unique shape. The Candelabra tree, Araucaria angustifolia, the Paraná pine or Brazilian pine is a species in the conifer genus Araucaria. It is native to southern Brazil and is typically found in the states of Paraná, Santa Catarina, and Rio Grande do Sul. The seeds, similar to large pine nuts, are edible, and are extensively harvested. This tree is important to the survival of the Araucaria Tit-Spinetail. Temperatures were in the upper 80's to low 90's on this partly cloudy day.
