During the morning of October 10, 2011, we birded the escarpment at Colinhas do São Francisco near our hotel, the Hotel Veraneio Hampel, in São Francisco de Paula. The Araucaria Tree has an unique, candelabra shape. Araucaria angustifolia, the Paraná pine or Brazilian pine is a species in the conifer genus Araucaria. It is native to southern Brazil and is typically found in the states of Paraná, Santa Catarina, and Rio Grande do Sul. The seeds, similar to large pine nuts, are edible, and are extensively harvested. This tree is important to the survival of the Araucaria Tit-Spinetail. Temperatures were in the 60's on this partly cloudy morning with intermittent rain and fog.
