During the morning of October 10, 2011, we birded the escarpment at Colinhas do São Francisco near our hotel, the Hotel Veraneio Hampel, in São Francisco de Paula. The Red-rumped Warbling-Finch has been divided into two separate species. The more northern species is now known as the Buff-throated Warbling-Finch (Poospiza lateralis) while the more southern is now known as the Gray-throated Warbling-Finch (Poospiza cabanisi). This photograph shows a Gray-throated Warbling-Finch with its distinct long white supercilium, brownish back, and gray throat and chest. The flanks and rump are rufous. Temperatures were in the 60's on this partly cloudy morning with intermittent rain and fog.
