We drove the road to Canela, RS235, along a 10 kilometer stretch with major stops at kilometer 68 and 65 to do some afternoon birding on October 8, 2011. Brad photographed this Great Pampa-Finch (Embernagra platensis) perched on a a fence post. The bird has a prominent yellowish-orange colored bill, a dusky face, grayish underparts, and pinkish legs and feet. Its wings and black-streaked mantle are olive colored. This bird seems to posing to give us good looks at its black-streaked, olive-colored nape and hind-crown. Temperatures were in the 80's on this partly cloudy to rainy day.
