We birded the main trail at Reserva Volta Velha from early morning until late in the afternoon on October 3, 2011. After lunch in the dining hall, we enjoyed a siesta until 1500. Brad and I did some birding on the grounds surrounding the dining hall where we photographed this domesticated Helmeted Guineafowl. The Volta Velha Reserve is a popular birding spot in southern Brazil and is well-known among birders around the world. It is located in Itapoã on the northern coast of Santa Catarina state. The reserve encompasses about 2,300 acres within one of the largest areas of undisturbed Atlantic Forest (lowland rainforest on the coastal plain of Brazil) and is one of the most endangered biomes on earth. Temperatures were in the upper 80's to the low 90's on this partly cloudy day.
