On October 3, 2011, our group had a full day of birding at Reserva Volta Velha. After lunch in the dining hall, we enjoyed a siesta until 1500. Brad and I decided to make the most of our time there and birded the grounds. This closeup shot of a domesticated Helmeted Guineafowl showing facial wattles and casque. The body plumage is gray-black spangled with white. Its unfeathered head is decorated with a dull yellow or reddish bony knob, and red and blue (whitish here) patches of skin. The wings are short and rounded, and the tail is short. Temperatures were in the upper 80's to low 90's on this partly cloudy day.
