The Hooded Berryeater, Carpornis cucullata, is a Brazilian endemic. The neck, head and breast are black. The rest of the bird's underparts are yellow as is a thin collar that extends around the neck. The mantle is brownish-chestnut color, and the wings are blackish with two whitish wing bars. During the morning of October 5, 2011, we birded the highlands (elevation: 3,000 feet) of the Serra da Graciosa, a southern extension of the Serra do Mar, a long system of mountain ranges and escarpments in Southeastern Brazil that parallels the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. Our base was in Curitiba, the capital of the Brazilian state of Paraná. Temperatures were in the upper 60's on this cloudy, overcast morning.
