We drove the road to Tainhas, RS020, with major stops at kilometer 98.5 (Ponte Rio do Pinto) and kilometer 107 to do some morning birding on October 9, 2011. Our ultimate goal for this day was Itaimbezinho Canyon in Aparados da Serra National Park near Cambará do Sul (a municipality in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil). This is a photograph of a male Hooded Siskin (Carduelis magellanica) that Brad took at our first stop (Ponte Rio do Pinto). This siskin has yellowish underparts, wingbars, rump, and collar. Its crown and throat are black. Temperatures were in the 60's on this cool, partly cloudy morning.
