We took this photograph of a Maroon-bellied Parakeet during the morning on October 4, 2011, at Reserva Volta Vehla. Maroon-bellied Parakeets range from 10-11 inches in length and have green upperparts, a maroon patch on the belly, a "scaly looking" yellowish-green-barred breast and sides of neck, a whitish ear-patch often tinged brown, and a maroon undertail. The forecrown is greenish with a maroon-colored frontlet. We birded the main clearing area near the dining hall until the weather cleared. Temperatures were in the 70's on this cloudy, overcast morning. The Volta Velha Reserve is a popular birding spot in southern Brazil and is well-known among birders around the world. It is located in Itapoã on the northern coast of Santa Catarina state. The reserve encompasses about 2,300 acres within one of the largest areas of undisturbed Atlantic Forest (lowland rainforest on the coastal plain of Brazil) and is one of the most endangered biomes on earth.
