Our group was birding at Guardião das Aguas (Boy Scout Camp Marsh) near Curitiba during the morning of October 6, 2011. This is a photograph of a Marsh (Wetland) Tapaculo that we saw. The "looking for part" is difficult, time consuming, and even frustrating work. The majority of birds in this family are small blackish or brown birds that skulk along the ground and stay low in dense vegetation. Actual looks at this tapaculo were rewarding as were any photos. This Brazilian endemic, Scytalopus iraiensis, was first sighted on April 19, 1997, in wetlands beside the Iraí River near Curitiba in southern Brazil. Its upperparts are plain blackish in colour, and the underparts are dark grey. The legs are a reddish-brown, and the bill is dark. The flanks of adult birds are unbarred. Temperatures were in the upper 70's on this sunny morning.
