Late in the morning on October 10, 2011, we saw this Mottled-cheeked Tyrannulet (Phylloscartes ventralis) while birding the grounds of our hotel, the Hotel Veraneio Hampel, in São Francisco de Paula. The Mottled-cheeked is one of the commonest birds in its range. Its chin and superaloral area are whitish in color, and the two wings bars are a yellowish-white. Note the bird's relatively horizontal stance. Temperatures were in the upper 70's on this partly cloudy morning with intermittent rain and fog.
