We took a morning flight from Curitiba to Pôrto Alegre, an important shipping center in southern Brazil, on the morning of October 7, 2011. Our group had a late lunch at Schneider's Churrascaria in Pôrto Alegre. Then we drove to our hotel, the Hotel Veraneio Hampel, in São Francisco de Paula, Rio Grande do Sul, where we did some late afternoon birding. This female Mottled Piculet, Picumnus nebulosus, was one of the birds that we photographed on the hotel grounds. The female has a black crown speckled with white. The buffy-whitish belly and flanks are streaked a dark brownish-black. A buffy-brown collar and a sharp woodpecker like bill are evident. Temperatures were in the 80's on this sunny day.
