After lunch on October 4, 2011, we birded the open field near the dining hall at Reserva Volta Velha. Brad photographed this female Ochre-collared Piculet as it perched in a nearby tree. The female has a black crown speckled with white, an ochre-colored collar around the back of the neck, and black barring on white underparts. The Volta Velha Reserve is a popular birding spot in southern Brazil and is well-known among birders around the world. It is located in Itapoã on the northern coast of Santa Catarina state. The reserve encompasses about 2,300 acres within one of the largest areas of undisturbed Atlantic Forest (lowland rainforest on the coastal plain of Brazil) and is one of the most endangered biomes on earth. Temperatures were in the low 80's on this partly cloudy day.
