After leaving Aparados da Serra National Park during the late afternoon on October 9, 2011, we birded a stretch of forest north of Cambará do Sul (a municipality in the state Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil). We made one additional stop to look for the Planalto Tapaculo, a Brazilian endemic, on the way back to Hotel Veraneio Hampel in São Francisco de Paula. The Planalto Tapaculo (Scytalopus pachecoi) was previously included with the Mouse-colored Tapaculo (Scytalopus speluncae). In 2005, based on differences in plumage and vocalizations, it was described as a new species. Both sexes have dark-barred lower flanks. Males have darker upperparts. Temperatures were in 80's on this partly cloudy, humid day.
