On October 9, 2011, we drove the road to Tainhas, RS020, to do some morning birding. Our ultimate goal for this day was Itaimbezinho Canyon in Aparados da Serra National Park near Cambará do Sul (a municipality in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil). This Plumbeous Rail (Pardirallus sanguinolentus) was feeding in a marshy area along the side of the road. This large rail has a long, greenish-yellow bill that has a reddish spot at the base of the mandible and a blue spot at the base of the upper maxillary. Temperatures were in the 70's on this partly cloudy morning.
