On October 9, 2011, we drove the road to Tainhas, RS020, to do some morning birding. Our ultimate goal for this day was Itaimbezinho Canyon in Aparados da Serra National Park near Cambará do Sul (a municipality in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil). Brad photographed this Red-legged Seriema (Cariama cristata) in a grassy field high above the roadway. This is a large bird (approximately 35 inches in length) that has a red bill and legs. The Red-legged Seriema is a brownish-colored bird with an erectile crest. Temperatures were in the upper 60's on this cool, partly cloudy morning.
