Early in the morning on October 3, 2011, we arrived at Reserva Volta Velha for a day of birding along the main trail. This photograph of four Roseate Spoonbills was taken near the dining hall. The Volta Velha Reserve is a popular birding spot in southern Brazil and is well-known among birders around the world. It is located in Itapoã on the northern coast of Santa Catarina state. The reserve encompasses about 2,300 acres within one of the largest areas of undisturbed Atlantic Forest (lowland rainforest on the coastal plain of Brazil) and is one of the most endangered biomes on earth. Temperatures were in the mid-70's on this partly cloudy day.
