After a busy morning of birding at Reserva Volta Velha on October 4, 2011, we drove to Curitiba. Along the way, we stopped at Itapma du Norte beach where Brad photographed this Sandwich (Cayenne) Tern, thalasseus sandvicensis eurygnatha, which is a South American breeder. Closely related to the more temperate Sandwich Tern, the Cayenne Tern's crest plumage is longer and more shaggy. It has an all-yellow bill and yellow or black legs. Note: taxonomic relationship with the Sandwich Tern is unresolved. Temperatures were in the low 80's on this partly cloudy afternoon.
