On October 9, 2011, we drove the road to Tainhas, RS020, to do some morning birding. Our ultimate goal for this day was Itaimbezinho Canyon in Aparados da Serra National Park near Cambará do Sul (a municipality in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil). This Savanna Hawk (Buteogallus meridionalis) flew over us while we were looking for Hellmayr's Pipit at a stop near Cambará. This broad-winged, long-legged hawk has a rufous tail and plumage. This photograph shows the bird's black-tipped wing feathers. Temperatures were in the 70's on this partly cloudy morning.
