We birded the main trail at Reserva Volta Velha from early morning until late in the afternoon on October 3, 2011. After lunch in the dining hall, we enjoyed free-time until 1500. During this time, Brad and I rested and did some birding around the dining hall where we photographed this Saw-billed Hermit. A buffy supercilium, buffy-orangish colored throat, broad white and brown streaks on the breast narrowing on the belly, and a tail edged with buffy-orangish tips are diagnostic. Males have straight bills with a small hooked tip, while those of females are slightly decurved. At ten grams, the Saw-billed Hermit is one of the largest and heaviest hummingbirds. Temperatures were in the upper 80's to the low 90's on this partly cloudy day.
