Early in the morning on October 3, 2011, we arrived at Reserva Volta Velha for a day of birding along the main trail. We photographed this Sayaca Tanager perched in a tree in the field in front of the dining hall. The Sayaca Tanager is similar to the Blue-gray Tanager and is its southern and eastern counterpart. The Sayaca has a blue shoulder and a turquoise-blue edging on the wings and tail. Its voice differs from the Blue-gray. The Volta Velha Reserve is a popular birding spot in southern Brazil and is well-known among birders around the world. It is located in Itapoã on the northern coast of Santa Catarina state. The reserve encompasses about 2,300 acres within one of the largest areas of undisturbed Atlantic Forest (lowland rainforest on the coastal plain of Brazil) and is one of the most endangered biomes on earth. Temperatures were in the mid-70's on this partly cloudy day.
