We took this photograph of a Small-billed Elaenia during the morning of October 4, 2011, at Reserva Volta Vehla. The Small-billed Elaenia is similar to the White-crested Elaenia. Habitat, elevation and calls can be used to differentiate the two species. We birded the main clearing area near the dining hall until the weather cleared. Temperatures were in the 70's on this cloudy, overcast morning. The Volta Velha Reserve is a popular birding spot in southern Brazil and is well-known among birders around the world. It is located in Itapoã on the northern coast of Santa Catarina state. The reserve encompasses about 2,300 acres within one of the largest areas of undisturbed Atlantic Forest (lowland rainforest on the coastal plain of Brazil) and is one of the most endangered biomes on earth.
