We drove the road to Tainhas, RS020, with major stops at kilometer 98.5 (Ponte Rio do Pinto) and kilometer 107 to do some morning birding on October 9, 2011. Our ultimate goal for this day was Itaimbezinho Canyon in Aparados da Serra National Park near Cambará do Sul (a municipality in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil). Brad photographed this Sooty Tyrannulet (Serpophaga nigricans) perched amid the branches of a small tree at our first stop (Ponte Rio do Pinto). This tyrannulet has grayish-brown colored upperparts, pale gray underparts, a whitish throat, black legs, and a black tail. Two faint gray-colored wingbars are evident on each wing. Males and females are similar in appearance. Temperatures were in the 60's on this cool, partly cloudy morning.
