After leaving Aparados da Serra National Park during the late afternoon on October 9, 2011, we birded a stretch of forest about 8-9 kilometers north of Cambará do Sul (a municipality in the state Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil). This is a photograph of a family of Speckled Teals (Anas flavirostris) that we saw in one of the wetland areas near the roadway. This teal is a smaller version of the Yellow-billed Pintail. However, its flanks are hardly speckled, and its blue speculum is surrounded by one white and one buff-colored stripe. Temperatures were in 80's on this partly cloudy, humid day.
