We took this photograph of a Variegated Flycatcher during the morning of October 4, 2011, at Reserva Volta Vehla. When compared to the Streaked Flycatcher, the Variegated Flycatcher has a smaller bill, is smaller in size with darker upperparts and is less crisply streaked on the underparts. We birded the main clearing area near the dining hall until the weather cleared. Temperatures were in the 70's on this cloudy, overcast morning. The Volta Velha Reserve is a popular birding spot in southern Brazil and is well-known among birders around the world. It is located in Itapoã on the northern coast of Santa Catarina state. The reserve encompasses about 2,300 acres within one of the largest areas of undisturbed Atlantic Forest (lowland rainforest on the coastal plain of Brazil) and is one of the most endangered biomes on earth.
