After leaving Bariqui Park in Curitiba on the afternoon of October 6, 2011, we had a late afternoon lunch. Post-lunch birding consisted of a trip to the Zoo-botanical Park in Curitiba to look for specialities (wild, not domesticated). This is a photo of a Wattled Jacana, Jacana jacana. This species has huge feet and claws that allow them to walk on floating vegetation in shallow lakes. Adults have a chestnut back and wing coverts. The rest of the body is black. The knob and wattle are red, while the bill is a bright yellow. In flight the greenish-yellowish flight feathers are visible. Note the yellow spur at the bend of the wing (see photo). Temperatures were in the 80's on this sunny afternoon.
