The Azure-shouldered Tanager (Thraupis cyanoptera) is a Brazilian endemic. We were birding from the covered porch of Pousada Pica Pau at Intervales State Park on October 13, 2011. Upperparts and underparts are a grayish-blue color. The shoulder, which is often concealed, is a deep blue. The flanks and tail have a turquoise tinge. Temperatures on this cloudy morning with intermittent rain were in the 60's. Intervales State Park is located on a 3,300 foot high escarpment in the State of São Paulo in the Paranapiacaba mountain range/upper Ribeira Valley, southwest of the city of São Paulo and north of Curitiba.
