During the morning of October 13, 2011, we birded Intervales State Park in Brazil. The park is located on a 3,300 foot high escarpment in the State of São Paulo in the Paranapiacaba mountain range/upper Ribeira Valley, southwest of the city of São Paulo and north of Curitiba. Temperatures on this cloudy morning with intermittent rain were in the 60's. We saw this Brassy-breasted Tanager (Tangara desmaresti), a Brazilian endemic, along the road below Pousada Pica Pau. The bird is emerald green with black streaks on the head, nape, and wings. The forecrown and area around the eyes are turquoise. The brassy-colored breast is surrounded by emerald flanks. The lower belly is yellow. This frontal view of the bird shows the black throat spot and black smudge around the bill.
