Brad photographed this male Brazilian Ruby (Clytolaema rubricauda) on October 20, 2011, from the rear balcony off the Hotel do Ype's restaurant. This Brazilian endemic is green with shades varying from an iridescent emerald color (above the straight, black bill) to a dull blackish-green on the belly. A white post-ocular spot and the deep ruby-colored throat are visible. The rufous in the underwings can also be seen as this bird takes flight. Temperatures were in the 60's on this partly cloudy morning.
