We drove from REGUA (Reserva Ecológica de Guapiaçu) to Nova Friburgo and on to Sumidouro during the latter part of the morning of October 23, 2011. After enjoying splendid views of several Three-toed Jacamars, we did some additional birding in the area. Brad photographed a side view of a Crescent-chested Puffbird, Malacoptila striata, sitting in a nearby tree. This Brazilian endemic has dark brown upperparts that are streaked with buffy-colored lines and spots. A white crescent on the chest (not visible here) is bordered below by a black and then a rufous colored band. Underparts are buffy. Temperatures were in the low 70's on this partly cloudy afternoon.
