On our last day in Brazil, we took an add-on tour with our guide Ricardo to visit the city of Rio and see some of the sights. One of the places we stopped was Tijuca National Park with its colossal sculpture of Christ the Redeemer and its visitor's platform that sit atop the 2,329 foot tall granite dome of Corcovado. Cristo Redentor is the largest Art Deco statue and the fifth largest of Jesus in the world. The statue is 130 feet tall and 98 feet wide. This symbol of Brazilian Christianity is an icon for Rio. It is made of reinforced concrete and soapstone and was constructed between 1922 and 1931. Designed by Heitor da Silva Costa and sculpted by Polish-French sculptor Paul Landowski, the statue was opened to the public on October 12, 1931.
