We spent the remainder of the afternoon and early evening of October 20, 2011, birding pasture lands below Itatiaia National Park. Brad photographed this Curl-crested Jay (Cyanocorax cristatellus) as it perched in a nearby tree. The head is a dark brownish-black color. Upperparts are blue, and underparts and lower portion of the tail are white. A distinctive recurved crest tops the forecrown. Members of this species form groups of nine to eleven individuals that act as cooperative breeders to actively help in feeding and rearing the next generation. Temperatures were in the 60's on this partly cloudy day.
