We photographed this Diademed Tanager (Stephanophorus diadematus) on October 13, 2011, from the covered porch of Pousada Pica Pau at Intervales State Park. Rain, once again, limited our activities. The Diademed is a dark purplish-blue color with a black facial mask, forehead, and chin. A red patch surrounded by white on the bird's crown (not visible here) is a distinctive feature of the species. Temperatures on this cloudy morning with intermittent rain were in the 60's. Intervales State Park is located on a 3,300 foot high escarpment in the State of São Paulo in the Paranapiacaba mountain range/upper Ribeira Valley, southwest of the city of São Paulo and north of Curitiba.
