After a four hour drive during the afternoon of October 18, 2011, and some late afternoon birding at a marshy area below Itatiaia National Park, we arrived at the Hotel do Ype where we stayed for three nights. Brad photographed this Dusky-legged Guan, Penelope obscura, on the road near our chalet. Features that can be used to identify this species are bright red eyes and dewlap (throat wattle) and whitish edging on the wing coverts and mantle. Temperatures were in the 60's on this overcast evening.
