This is a photo of a Black-ear-tufted Marmoset, Callithrix jaccus penicillata, that came into the private forest area where we were watching wild Golden Lion Tamarins the morning of October 24, 2011. This subspecies has black tufts of hair around its ears and sparse white hair on the face. Upperparts and abdomen are gray while underparts and rump are black. Its ringed black and white tail is used for balance and is not prehensile. Nails, like the Golden Lion Tamarin's, are claw-like. The troop of Golden Lion Tamarins that we were watching scampered off once these guys appeared. Temperatures were in the 70's on this clear day with blue skies.
